welcome to Canadian SHIELD Ethics Review Board Inc.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has recently released Guidelines for Health Research Involving Aboriginal People. Development was a cooperative initiative between CIHR’s Ethics Office and the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health (IAPH). These Guidelines are intended to facilitate research that is sensitive to, and respectful of, Aboriginal cultures and beliefs, and adherence to the guidelines will be a condition of CIHR funding when fully implemented. Note that the guidelines are intended to be interpreted in conjunction with the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS), other CIHR research policies, and all applicable law. It is expected that researchers, Aboriginal communities, institutional research ethics boards and Aboriginal ethics boards will find these guidelines useful in developing and approving research protocols that are of mutual benefit. They are designed to facilitate research by promoting agreement and avoiding misunderstanding. You can access the Guidelines online at http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/29339.html . Hard copies are available upon request through ethics-éthique@cihr-irsc.gc.ca .
